Freshman Representative
9/2/21
Position Assessment:
The freshman representatives in the class of 2025 have all worked designing and publicizing the freshman t-shirts. We met at one of the rep’s homes and designed a freshman t-shirt and sold over 120 shirts at Club Rush and Pow-wow. We were manning the tables at events such as Pow-wow and Club Rush. These events served as good preparation for the events and planning that is to come. We have yet to host any events such as dances or parades. The freshman representatives are currently working on the Homecoming preparations and are working together to make it a great event.
Special committee:
The homecoming preparations by the freshmen have brought us closer together as a team. We are currently working together to plan a float, activities, and what each member can do to contribute to the event. We’re working together to keep the high school a welcoming place and make the events fun for all.
Mentorship evaluation:
My mentor is Derek Nguyen. He’s been a great teacher and has led me through a lot of things that I didn’t understand at the beginning of the year. He always checks in on me and tells me to ask questions if I have them. He’s made my first month at Ripon High feel like a smooth transition. He’s a cheerful and funny person, and he works hard with Gideon on things like music and technology.
Concerns:
I feel like the leadership program can seem kind of secluded from the rest of the student body and we should be more inclusive to those outside of the program. I knew a few people that wanted to take part in the program, but could not. These people had great ideas that I think could be useful to not only leadership but the school as a whole. I think we could improve our reputation by being more inclusive and open-minded.
Positive Comment:
I have noticed that Gideon Waters has been responsible for his duties as technology commissioner. Especially at club rush, I saw him monitoring all of the sound equipment and playing the music well. He was also very kind to those around him while doing so. He works well with others and works hard to complete his responsibilities.
Change:
I would like to see more inclusivity between our program and the general student body. I think that hearing the ideas from everybody can help us move toward a more “normal” future. The Covid-19 pandemic has caused many lives to change very drastically and I think that being open-minded can help the people feel a clean transition back to normalcy.
My Impact:
I have changed the world by being hospitable to my classmates and friends in things such as extracurricular activities. In my various classes, I have met new people and made a lot of new friends. I believe that the act of simply being someone’s friend can improve their life by a large margin. Being friendly to those around us can improve the world for the better.

The Freshman Representatives had a difficult time during Homecoming, mostly due to lack of preparation on our part. In most of our responsibilities, we had a habit of procrastinating. However, we did complete the job and successfully made a HomeComing dance, float, and posters. The Freshman Representatives first had to come up with a dance routine for the night rally. We got a lot of outside participation in this lip sync with things like props and decorations. Another event that the freshmen helped out with was the Back to School Dance. A couple of hours before the dance, people gathered near the football field to set up all of the decorations and precautions. I was a part of the fencing committee for that and I tied the fencing together with caution tape to keep it in place. The dance was fun and the cleaning-up was efficient. I was very impressed with how quickly we finished the clean-up process. The freshmen gathered a few times to make posters and the float. I was assigned the job of painting boxes and the helm for the steamboat theme. Once the actual parade arrived, I was one of the people that stood behind the float to pick up any loose streamers or decorations that fell off. Now, the Halloween dance is coming up and the freshmen have learned a lot about preparation and we are ready to host this event for the student body.
Mentorship evaluation: Derek has been my mentor for the past few months and he has been very willing to help me and the other freshmen. I went to lunch with him and he told me a lot about being a senior at Ripon High School. It was really cool to get the perspective of someone who had been at the school for more than three years. Derek is the technology commissioner and he has taught me a lot about the technological things he does at home. He’s given me a lot of advice about going through high school and he helped me make my website. He frequently checks in on the freshmen to see if any of us need any help.
Concerns: Much of the stress among the freshmen was caused by lack of preparation. I think that if we would procrastinate less on things, then we could be more efficient in the things that we do. We’ve been working hard to learn from our mistakes, but Homecoming was much more difficult than it could have been if we had prepared.
Positive Comment: I think it’s impressive how many praises we got in our class and how much the class compliments each other. It was very uplifting to hear all of the positive things that people have to say about each other. I was also very happy with the mental health exercises that we did in the class during this past week. It felt good to let go of my baggage and write a thank you letter to an influential person in my life. I was also glad to see how many people participated in said activity.
One Change: One change I would like to see is more positivity among the student body. I think that the school could benefit from the activities performed in leadership. With “Dude, be nice” coming up, I am excited to see what will happen between the students.
My Impact: Even small acts, such as picking up trash around the school and saying “Hello” to people, can make those around us feel just a little bit better. And by doing these small things, we can slowly spread kindness around the school until there is a more positive atmosphere. I’ve noticed that people tend to pick up more trash around campus when they see others doing the same. So, whenever I see a piece of trash around campus, I make sure to throw it away.

ASB Report: November-December 2021
James Wilkins
Freshman Representative
9/12/2021
Position Assessment:
The Freshmen Representatives have been getting ahead of our work with meetings and brainstorming for future projects. Our primary example of this is the upcoming staff basketball game. Although this event is taking place many months from now, we have had a meeting with Mr. Perez where we discussed the plans and preparations. We will be publicizing the game to other Ripon Unified schools as well as on our own campus by talking to teachers that we know from said schools. More meetings will likely be held to brainstorm ideas for tickets and things. Our planning on the Halloween dance has familiarized us with working with Mr. Perez and he has been very helpful in planning and carrying out events. The freshmen reps have ordered our supplies for Winterfest, our theme being beach vs. mountain. We’ve been planning a lot, making designs for our cart and such. We had good participation with our door wrapping for our staff, that was very fun. The situation with our tree was mildly bubbly as some of our supplies had not been shipped by the time that the event started. However, we got it figured out and we gathered enough supplies to make the event work well for us. So, the Freshmen Reps have been hard at work finishing up paperwork and plans for upcoming events but we’re excited to see what the future holds.
Mentorship Evaluation:
Derek has been a great mentor through this past month. He’s answered my questions whenever I have them, even when they concern topics outside of leadership. Derek was a part of my group during the door wrapping project and we completed many wrappings that he is very proud of. Derek has exhibited many leadership skills and qualities throughout the time that I have known him and he is a very good technology commissioner. He’s helped me with my website and my portfolio. It’s been a pleasure working with my mentor and I’m looking forward to the next month in the leadership program.
Concerns:
One concern that I have about the leadership program is a slight lack of communication between the upper and lower classmen as groups. I think that, as a leadership family, we could all benefit from occasional reminders of events or just a quick check-in from other members of leadership.
Positive Comment:
I think that the Sophomores did an excellent job with the planning and carrying out of Winter Formal. It was an amazing experience and I was glad to be able to call it my very first formal dance. A lot of the student body said that they had a good time. I can’t wait to see what they do next.
One Change:
One change that I think could be made in the program is perhaps more activities that we could do outside of school as a program, rather than only hanging out with our mentors. The tree decorating was a good example of this, but I believe that more of these activities could strengthen our group as a whole.
My Impact:
I had an impact this month because I have been trying to get more involved with our program in things like events and activities. For example, I volunteered to give the ASB report for this month and I provided the tree for our tree decorating. I plan to be more involved with our creative planning on things, such as the cart for Winterfest and our upcoming staff basketball game. I’m very glad that we have been able to get ahead on some of our upcoming projects, even though they may be far in the future.

ASB Report: January 2022

Freshman Representative
10/2/2022
Position Assessment:
The Freshman Representatives have had a great January. We have been planning early for the upcoming staff basketball game with Mr. Perez. Winterfest was a very fun series of activities, both for the students and those planning the events. One of the most involved parts of Winterfest was the dress up days. I saw a lot of involvement with all of the students, especially during our Friday event. On Winterfest Friday, we had “Bring Anything But a Backpack Day.” This day saw an immense amount of school involvement, from air fryers to lawn mowers, everybody brought non-backpack items to carry their things in. The Leadership speeches were a very interesting assignment to take part in and I think we all enjoyed listening to and creating speeches.
Mentorship Evaluation:
Derek has been a great friend during my entire time in the Ripon High Leadership program. I went to lunch with him on Tuesday and we had an enjoyable time. As we ate, he told me more about being a senior at Ripon High. Derek and I talked about how to find good friends at school and how to find one’s interests and such. Derek has been very helpful in my work, always willing to proofread my writing.
Concerns:
A concern that I have for our class is the amount of stress that can develop, especially during events like elections. The competition between classmates can create a stressful environment, which can affect performance.
Positive Comment:
I was thrilled while listening to the speeches of my classmates. Every speech either made me laugh or learn something, which was a good experience. It shined a new light on public speaking.
One Change:
One change that I think could be implemented would be some way to reduce the amount of stress and competition that can be seen in our classroom. As of now, I have heard many complaints about the amount of stress that people feel due to the pressure of election time and I think that if we could be more encouraging to each other, then we could make a more positive environment.
My Impact:
The Kids Against Hunger service activity was very fun and uplifting as well as successful. It was a very good experience of service. This, in addition to the Valentine’s cards, taught me how fun service can be. Doing something that you know is a service to somebody else can give a sense of fulfillment that you can’t get anywhere else.

Freshman Representative
4/12/2022
Position Assessment:
The Freshman Representatives have had an interesting last two months due to the start of the track season, which most of our personnel are a part of. Various track meets have made it mildly challenging to schedule meetings that work for everybody in our group. However, we have still managed to participate in our classwork and planning for the upcoming staff basketball game. We have had meetings with Mr. Perez to discuss the date, time and location of said game. Additionally, we have been contacting individuals to establish teams for the game. Much of it has been going smoothly and we are all looking forward to the game. The class was recognized at the national level for our leadership skills, which is a great honor for everyone. We are glad to be recognized so that we may continue to make the high school experience better for our student body.
Special Committee:
I have been a part of the dance committee for The Challenge. I thought that I could give some music recommendations, but it was relieving to hear that we already had a playlist. I hope to be very helpful to the committee as the week of The Challenge approaches. It seems like a very new experience that will have much to teach the freshmen. I am hoping to help put on a fun activity for the student body during these last few months of school.
Mentorship Evaluation:
Among everything that has been crazy in the past few months, Derek has kept his gregarious self. It’s quite incredible to me that someone can be so friendly and cheerful to others even when they have stressful things going on in their lives. I think that part of what makes Derek a great leader is his ability to make friends with anybody that he meets. He’s always helpful. He has often checked over my website for me to make sure that it is up to date, which I very much appreciate.
Concerns:
The only concern I would state from the past months is a decline in effort as we approach the end of the year. I don’t anticipate it happening in the Leadership classroom, as there is a lot to plan. However, some students may grow more lazy as the end of the year approaches.
Positive Comment:
I am very proud and thrilled with the performance of the Gallery of the Arts committee. It was a delightful event that I thoroughly enjoyed and I am sure the rest of the student body did as well. Another positive comment I would like to make is on our CASL recognition. It was very interesting to see the video of our representatives going to the CASL meetings. I enjoyed hearing about it and I am proud to be a part of the Ripon High Leadership program.
One Change:
One change that I think could be made in the classroom is more personal connection between all of the members of the program. Having an event that includes the whole program, such as going to lunch or getting ice cream, would be very fun and connecting within our group.
My Impact:
The Leadership classroom never ceases to give me opportunities to serve others. As such, I have been trying to volunteer more often for different events within the school. Among the other small things that I do for our school, such as picking up trash and setting examples for others, I try to be of service to my peers in the classroom as well.

James Wilkins
Freshmen Representative
5/12/2022
Position Assessment:
From the Staff Vs Student Basketball game to the challenge, the freshmen representatives have had a lot of fun with the events leadership has put on for the student body. We worked with Mr. Perez to put together a fun basketball game between our students and staff, which was quite successful. Many students attended the event, as well as their parents, and we completed a good amount of fundraising for our class. Mr. Perez was very helpful in holding us accountable, but giving us freedom in our planning. Additionally, we helped in the carrying out of a series of events dubbed “The Challenge.” Some of these events included passing out treats for our student body, and an End-of-the-Year dance. Among track meets and AP tests, there were times when it was difficult to participate. But we all contributed and created many positive memories for our student body.
Standing Committee:
Being a part of the Dance committee for The Challenge was a really rewarding experience, as I got to know some of my peers better. One of the first things I did as part of the committee was help in rewarding our student body with otter pops and cookies at lunch. I made sure to advertise, so that our student body would know that the dance was free entry. At the actual event, I served two shifts at the snow cone stand, and had a lot of fun doing so. It felt really fulfilling to serve nice treats to students who wanted them. I am very glad that I took part in this committee, as it felt great to give to our student body without asking for anything in return.
Special Committee:
I was a participant in the College Reveal Committee for the seniors of Ripon High School. It was a very successful event that I believe that people enjoyed and created a lot of good memories for our seniors who will be leaving us next year. Setting up was relatively easy and quick, considering the amount of people that were present in the committee. There was a balloon arch and red carpet, which added to the festive atmosphere of the event. We provided an event that allowed our senior group to take pictures to remember their end of high school as they take their next step in their career.
Mentorship Evaluation:
Derek is a very enthusiastic member of the leadership team. He is always looking for opportunities to provide help, rides, or support. I don’t think I could count the amount of times that Derek has helped me out. His fun, gregarious attitude provides a new atmosphere for the classroom. He’s taught me many lessons about high school and leadership that have helped me greatly in the high school social world and having lunch in his car is definitely a core memory of my time in Leadership.
Concern:
A concern that I have regards the upcoming events for our school. It is quite interesting to think that this could be our last rally at Ripon High and I wonder if there could be anything that we would replace such a tradition with. A concern that I would have would not only be the rowdiness and difficulty during the rally, but what would come of canceling rallies altogether.
Positive Comment:
I have heard many positive comments about the dance and other events that took place during the Challenge. The student body greatly enjoyed it and I look forward to seeing what the Leadership program does with it next year. It was very fun to help out with and I’m sure very fun to partake in.
One Change:
One Change I would like to see in the future is better communication between the Leadership members. There were many times that I was not made aware of a project or event that I was required to attend. Although I have seen many improvements, I think it would be interesting to see some new communication systems implemented.
My Impact:
I have been trying to build myself through writing so that I can share my work with the world. I think that it would be quite fulfilling to help others through what I do best, which is writing. I have been getting involved in more extracurricular activities to meet new people and make new friends. As the school year comes to an end, there is plenty of time and room for improvement and helping others.
